July is high summer in the islands — warm, bright, and easy. Water temps push past 85°F, the sea lies down flat for days at a stretch, and the long light means there's no such thing as a rushed afternoon on the water.
The month belongs to St. John. Cruz Bay throws its Fourth of July Festival — the oldest Carnival celebration in the U.S. Virgin Islands — with a food fair, steel pan and soca, a morning parade, and fireworks over the harbor after dark. Time a charter around it and you get both: a day on the water and a front-row seat to the islands at their most festive.
Underwater, this is turtle season. Drop anchor off Maho Bay or swim the loop around Waterlemon Cay and you'll share the shallows with green sea turtles and rays drifting over the grass beds. Calm mornings make the visibility unreal — bring the snorkel gear and take your time.
Come for the fireworks, stay for the flat-calm water.
